1. Pre-Application Advice & Eligibility Check

Applications are invited from highly motivated and research-oriented applicants. Applicants are strongly advised to visit the profiles of the faculty members at the respective Department web page, and the advertisement uploaded by each Department, before applying for the PhD Program.

Before making arrangements for paying the non-refundable application fee, please verify your eligibility strictly by checking the Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQ) and Qualifying Examination (QE) requirements of the Department to which you intend to apply.

2. Evaluation & Selection Process

Applicants are selected for admission to PhD programs through a rigorous evaluation process which includes an interview by a selection committee.

Mere application or fulfillment of the minimum eligibility criteria does not imply or guarantee admission into the PhD program.

3. Exemption for IIT Graduates

B.Tech. and M.Sc. graduates from IITs with a CPI ≥ 8.50 out of 10.00 are eligible for direct admission without the mandatory GATE / JEST / UGC-CSIR (NET) / UGC-CSIR (Ph.D. only) qualifications.

  • Candidates utilizing this exemption may seek admission only in their respective discipline.
  • Engineering graduates shall be considered only for Engineering Departments.
  • Science graduates shall be considered only for Science Departments.

4. GATE Score Exemptions (Special Categories)

A valid GATE score is not compulsory for applicants applying under the following special employment categories:

  • DF: Defense Forces
  • IS: Institute Staff
  • CT: College Teacher
  • SW: Sponsored (Without Institute Scholarship)

5. Acceptance of JEST Score

In addition to a valid GATE Score, a valid JEST Score is also actively considered to fulfill the Qualifying Examination (QE) criteria for admissions specifically into:

  • The Department of Physics
  • The Department of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Engineering (AASE)

6. Travel and Accommodation (TA/DA)

No TA/DA (Travelling Allowance / Dearness Allowance) will be provided to the applicants if called for the written test and/or interview. Candidates will be required to make their own travel arrangements to attend the selection process.

7. Communication with Applicants

All communication regarding the shortlisting for written tests/interviews will be conducted via email ONLY. Applicants must ensure they provide a valid, active email address carefully in their online application form.


@ Marks /CGPA/ CPI/ Percentage requirements in Qualifying Degrees


1. For UR/EWS/OBC(NCL) category:

A minimum of 60% marks in aggregate, OR

A First class as specified by the university, OR

A minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.0 on a scale of 0 – 10, OR

An equivalent to 6.0 CGPA/ CPI on other corresponding proportional requirements when the scales are other than 0 – 10.


2. For SC/ST/PwD category

A minimum of 55% marks in aggregate, OR

A First class as specified by the university, OR

A minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a scale of 0 – 10, OR

An equivalent to 5.5 CGPA/ CPI on other corresponding proportional requirements when the scales are other than 0 – 10.
